Tropenbos Indonesia (TI) has been active for more than 30 years as a knowledge broker (spreading knowledge) with the tagline "Making knowledge work for forests and people" and with a mission of "Bridging the gap between knowledge and practice on sustainable governance of forested landscape". TI continues to work on improving sustainable forest management practices at various levels, in decision making at the national, provincial and district levels, as well as at the village level which are in direct contact with community forest management practices.

As an independent non-profit organization, Tropenbos Indonesia was formerly known as Tropenbos International-Indonesia Program (TBI-IP), a part of the Tropenbos International (TBI) Network with a secretariat in Ede, The Netherlands. Since 1986, TBI-IP was active in conserving tropical forests in East Kalimantan. Its former office in East Kalimantan is now known as the Research Agency of Natural Resources Conservation Science in Balikpapan-Samarinda, with an important herbarium collection for tropical forests.

Expanding its scope of activities from East Kalimantan to all over Indonesia, TBI-IP officially became Tropenbos International Indonesia (TBI Indonesia) in 2007, and since the end of 2016 it has been officially incorporated as an Indonesian legal entity under the name of Tropenbos Indonesia (TI). At the end of 2016 TI also started working in West Kalimantan under the Green Livelihoods Alliance 1.0 Programme which aimed to increase the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in natural resources management.

During the years of its existence, programmes managed by TI have increased, and number of the programs currently are as follows:

1. Working Landscape/WL Programme (2019-2023)
2. Fires Prevention Programme (2021-2023)
3. MoMo4C (Mobilizing More for Climate) to support the WL Program in finance and business development (2020-2024)
4. Green Livelihoods Alliance (GLA) 2.0 (2021-2025)
5. Kalimantan Forest (Kalfor), funded by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (2022-2023)
6. Sustainable community-based forest management through strengthening the Village Forest Management Unit (LDPH) funded by Lestari Capital (2022-2023)

At present, Tropenbos Indonesia works in 23 villages in West Kalimantan, with 32 staff based in Bogor as well as in field offices in Ketapang, Simpang Dua and Sandai.
